Airdrieonians Football Club, were a Scottish professional football team from the town of Airdrie, in the Monklands area of Lanarkshire.
The team was founded in 1878 as Excelsior Football Club, changing its name to Airdrieonians in 1881. It was elected to the Scottish Football League in 1894.
The world’s first penalty kick was awarded to Airdrieonians in 1891 at Broomfield Park
In 1891 the club took a place in the record books they will never lose when they were awarded the first ever penalty kick and the following year they moved into Broomfield, close to Airdrie town center.
