The building was a 2008 public art piece by artists Erik Sturm und Simon Jung in the city center. The house was to be demolished. So before that happened, with the support of the Karin Abt-Straubinger Foundation, two artists painted the house a matte black as an art piece. After demolition, the owner, art gallery manager Karin Abt-Straubinger built a new gallery where the house stood.

The artists dipped a residential building that was cleared for demolition from the roof to the foundations in matt black and transformed it into a monumental sculpture shortly before its end / Image source
