The large building is believed to have been constructed about 100 AD in the heart of the Teotihuacan city. Teotihuacan is the name of a Mesoamerican indigenous civilization and its grandest city, once the largest city in Mexico.
Pyramid of the Sun, rises 65 meters above ground level, and it measures approximately 220 by 230 meters at its base. It was constructed in two phases. The first construction stage, brought the pyramid to nearly the size it is today. The second phase also saw the construction of an altar – temple atop of the pyramid which has not survived into modern times.
The destruction of the temple on top of the pyramid, by both deliberate and natural forces prior to the archaeological study of the site, has so far prevented identification of the pyramid with any particular deity.
The pyramid is composed of several different levels, with stairs leading from level to level. The Pyramid of the Sun is the largest structure in Teotihuacan, and the second largest in Mesoamerica. It is also one of the largest pyramid in the world.
