A market for live animals and seafood, it is said to be the largest wholesale seafood market in central China, hosting hundreds of tenants. The market opened in the summer of 2019.

The market building is located in the newest part of the city, close to shops, houses, schools, hospitals, museums, restaurants and about one kilometer from the big Hankou train station. This marketplace offered for sale more than 100 wild animals in clearly unsuitable conditions with live and dead animals coexisting nearby. Numerous animals were stacked in narrow cages, slaughtered and even packed close to consumers.

Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market became widely known worldwide after being identified as the “Ground Zero” site of the COVID-19 virus, and closed in January 2020.

The World Health Organization said it was informed in late December 2019 of an outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan. A group of people treated for pneumonia who have been officially identified as having SARS-CoV-2 laboratory infection by early January 2020, two-thirds were exposed to the market.
